'The Feet Map The Body'
In Reflexology it is believed that each system and organ of the body has a corresponding reflex in both the feet and hands i.e they are a map of the body. When these reflexes are worked there is a therapeutic effect in the related organ/system.

The client is in reclining position with the feet slightly raised. After some general massage movements a procedure is followed whereby both feet, usually starting with the right foot, are worked thus all systems and organs are treated.
Unlike in Acupuncture where needles are inserted into several points in the skin directly into the energy pathway, in Reflexology finger pressure is used on a corresponding foot/hand reflex. Gently stimulating and applying pressure to these reflexes we access the body's energy in order to activate the body to clear out any congestion that may have been causing blocks/imbalances which prevents the systems working efficiently. The pressure releases the block and the energy flows more freely. This encourages the body's systems to work more effectively.

What to Expect
Different feelings may be experienced by the client and these can be interpreted to indicate which systems/organs are out of balance. Sensations range from discomfort, pin pricks to numbness. In some cases where there are a lot of blockages very little sensation will be felt at first. As the energy starts to become more fluid more sensations, including very pleasant ones can be experienced in all parts of the body.
Children, including babies and toddlers are particularly responsive to reflexology/VRT. It helps build up their immune system and a strong immunity is essential in fighting all the childhood illnesses. It also encourages the healthy development of all the bodily systems and provides a sound foundation for a future healthy body and mind. Obviously the session is adapted for the child (See About FQAs).

History
Variations of foot massage have been practised over the world for centuries and Reflexology developed from these. In the early 1900s an ear, nose and throat doctor, Dr William Fitzgerald, introduced it to the West describing it as 'Zone Therapy'. This is based on the existence of a system of vertical and horizontal zones (lines) of energy running up through the body from the feet to the brain. Acupuncture is founded on a similar premise but the channels are called 'meridians' and do not follow such a perfect pattern as the zones.(Personally I favour the meridian model as this has been around for thousands of years and makes more sense to me energetically).
Over time Reflexology has developed one for instance is Vertical Reflexology (VRT). See below.

Vertical Reflexology
Vertical Reflexology is worked with the client standing up unlike in conventional reflexology where the feet are worked when the client is in reclining position. It may be used as a short treatment on its own or as part of a conventional treatment (reflexology sandwiched between VRT). In a short VRT session the client would stand up for the first and last part. During the middle bit the client would be in the reclining position. A short treatment is perfect to really stimulate the systems and I often use it as a dynamic re-energiser for people. Ideal when one's energy has dipped and a kick start is needed!
'Provides deeper access to the reflexes'
In VRT the reflexes on top of the feet are worked. The weight bearing position appears to provide deeper access to the reflexes. In addition synergistic techniques are used i.e. working two identical reflexes on hand and foot together. This amplifies the effects and sometimes quite dramatic benefits follow as the body quickly responds.
It is a very beneficial self help tool and where a client has chronic conditions I show them how to use it. It has the same effects as conventional reflexology but has been found particularly benefical for orthopedic conditions and infertility. It can also be used safely on children and for babies who have colic.
